LIMON4KIDS AT THE CREATIVE SEEDBEDS
Implementation of the Limon4Kids project to train workshop leaders for the Semilleros Creativos program, which provides arts education to children and youth in underserved communities across the country. This initiative is part of the celebration of 200 years of diplomatic relations between Mexico and the United States. This intensive training culminates with the students attending the Limón Company’s performance of *Migrant Mother* at the Bellas Artes in August 2023. The program is led by the Limón Company of New York. With 75 years of uninterrupted work, the company—founded by José Limón himself—is compelling evidence of the influence of Mexican culture on international contemporary dance. The company’s artistic director was invited to meet with Semilleros Creativos officials to collaborate on this training program for Semilleros workshop leaders. These workshop leaders will benefit children and youth by helping them, through José Limón’s dance techniques, to empower themselves—as has already been demonstrated through the Limon4kids program. Additionally, the residency undoubtedly created synergies; contacts were established and strengthened between figures in the U.S. and Mexican dance communities, with whom we seek to foster future exchanges that enrich both parties and promote the culture on both sides of the border for the general public. The workshop leaders, their students, and the Mexican dancers will become familiar with a dance technique as well as with the figure of José Limón, a world-renowned Mexican-American who represents the importance of Chicanos in the American social fabric.
