The project “Alebrijes and Nahuales: Fantastic Animals of Mexico” brings monumental sculptures from Oaxacan folk art to various cities across the United States with a clear goal: to use culture as a bridge.

Through giant figures brimming with color and symbolism, the initiative not only showcases Mexico’s artistic heritage but also promotes educational activities designed to introduce the public to these traditions.

More than just an exhibition, it serves as an act of cultural diplomacy: rather than creating conflict, it seeks to build connections, demonstrating that art can reshape narratives and foster dialogue between communities.

The event featured the creation of eight monumental alebrijes by Mexican artisans, as well as workshops led by the artisans who created the monumental pieces, lectures, storytelling sessions, and guided tours for schools, thereby fostering cultural exchange between Mexico and the United States.

This project aimed to honor the indigenous origins of Nahual art, build cultural bridges, and promote artistic and artisanal traditions, with the goal of bringing Mexican folk art to the thousands of Mexican-Americans living in the United States, as well as fostering their cultural identity and sparking greater interest among audiences unfamiliar with these artistic expressions.
